“Otsuka stages a series of intimate self portraits at the school ground she used to attend in the rural England. These images depict the artist revisiting both the site of her memories and explorations during her time at school. Through constructing only a mere hint or suggestion of herself within the backdrop of the schools surroundings, Otsuka creates the impression of abandonment and bewilderment, which she must have felt as a child. Represented as simply a splash in the blue waters of the schools swimming pool or a blurred figure washing in the stark institutionalism of bathrooms, Otsuka is always present. Cinematic or evocative she is a ghostly presence within an environment that has most probably unchanged for a number of generations... “ From Victoria & Albert Museum
