The Cookbook/Self-Cooking is an ongoing project that began early in my career. It is a series of works that explores my cultural heritage and identity through culinary identification (food memories). I have photographed parts of my body and subjected them to processes such as deep-frying in oil, freezing in various liquids, and boiling with noodles. Through these deconstructed images, I highlight the sensory connections between taste, smell, and memory, while also experimenting with the materiality of photographs. At the same time, I explore the labels associated with my Japanese/Asian identity, playing with stereotypes and questioning the notion of culinary identification. The works engage with the complex issues surrounding cultural identity.
